Hypertension is defined arbitrarily at levels above generally accepted 'normals',for example 140/90 at the age above 50 is considered to be normal but increased, in 30.
Exercise, anxiety, discomfort and unfamiliar surroundings can all lead to transient rise in blood pressure, and measurements should be repeated when the patient is resting and relaxed until consistent readings are obtained.
These are mostly of two types basing on the causes.
1. Essential hypertension is the condition in which elevated arterial pressure is the leading symptom. The disease is precipated by nervous and functional disorders in the regulation of the vascular tone.
2. Symptomatic hypertension is a condition in which arterial pressure rises as a symptom of other disease, this symptom being far from the leading one. Systematic hypertension occurs in endocrine dysfunction, atherosclerosis of aorta and its larger branches, affections of the renal arteries, and in some other diseases.
Overstrain of the central nervous system, caused by prolonged and strong emotional stress and also mental overstrain, are believed to be the main cause of the disease.
It is of two varieties - portal and renal hypertension.
A. Portal hypertension is characterized by a stable increase in the blood pressure in the portal vein. It develops due to obstructed blood outflow from the portal vein as a result of its compression from outside, or by chronic liver affections.
Peripheral small blood vessels are dilated, ascities develops, and the spleen increases in size.
B. Renal hypertension is caused by the affection of the kidneys or renal vessels and upset renal mechanism of arterial pressure regulation. Many diseases of the kidneys, and affections of the renal blood vessels are attended by elevated arterial pressure.
Symptoms include headache, dizziness, and noise in the ears, etc
Aurum Metallicum: high blood pressure with depression and suicidal thoughts; pulse rapid, feeble, irregular.
Baryta Carbonica: blood pressure much increased; palpitation and distress in the region of heart; worse when lying on left side.
Rauwolfia Serpentina: high blood pressure without marked atheromatus changes.
