Fever is characterised not only by elevated temperature but also by the distrubed function of the entire body. There is rise of temperature accompained by accelerated pulse and respiration rate. The patient complain of being hot, exhausted of headache dryness and the unpleasent feeling in the mouth, throat or thirstless and the absence of appetite, the tongue is coated and often dry, the amount of excreated urine decreases.
Fever intensifies metabolic process. And since the patient would often refuse food, his weight often decreases significantly.
Variations of temperature during the day determine the type of fever. The following main six types of fever are differentiated.
1. Continued fever- The daily variation does not exceed 1 degree centigrade.
2. Remittent fever - The daily variation exceeds 1 degree centigrade.
3. Intermittent fever- The daily variation exceeds 1 degree centigrade with complete apyrexia in remissions.
4. Hectic fever- The temperature raises sharply and drops to normal and sub normal levels. The fever often accompained by excessive
5. Inverse Fever- Here the morning temp. is heigher than in the evening.
6. Irregular fever- Here the daily variation are varied and irregular.
Fever lasting upto 15 days is called acute fever and over 45 days is called chronic fever.
In addition to measuring the body temp. with a thermometer, the temp. of various parts of the body should be felt by hand.
Aconite: after exposure to cold dry winds; anxiety; restlessness; fear; increased thirst; skin dry and hot.
Arsenicum Album: burning sensation; thirst increased for small quantities at small intervals; restlessness and anxiety;
Belladonna: high fever without thirst; face is red; sleepy but cannot sleep; throbbing headache.
Bryonia: dryness of mouth, lips, and tongue; thirst for large quantities of water at large intervals; wants to lie still; motion aggravates.
Gelsemium: dullness, dizziness, and drowsiness; wants to lie quietly; doesn’t want any company; thirstlessness.
Ipecaunha: nausea and vomiting; clean tongue; thirstlessness.
Pulsatilla: thirstlessness; changing pattern of fever; changing mood; constant chilliness even in a warm room; better in open air.
Rhus Toxicodendron: fever after exposure cold rainy weather or after getting wet; restlessness, constantly changing position; body aches.
