A contusion, commonly known as bruise, occurs due to tearing or rupture of minute blood
vessels beneath the skin or deeper tissues due to blow or injury.
Blood leaks into the tissues under the skin, becomes first red, then bluish green and finally fading away into yellow as the hemoglobin is converted in bilirubin and then gradually removed.

Most bruises are not a cause of concern and will go away on their own.
