Rash is one of the common presentations of skin disorders. Allergic rashes occur due to various reasons. They may be scaly, dry or oedematus rashes.
Diagnosis can often be made on clinical grounds or by biopsy.
Important aspects of the history are as follows:
1.Age at onset and duration of rash:
Atopic eczema often starts in early childhood, Psoriasis mostly occurs between 15 - 40 yrs and both may be chronic.
Infective or drug induced rashes are more likely to be of short duration and the latter occur in relation to drug ingestion.
Duration of the individual lesions is also important, for example in Urticaria.
2. Body site at onset and distribution:
For example- flexural sites are involved in Atopic eczema,
Extensor surfaces and scalp in Psoriasis.
Symmetry is often indicative of an internal disease, such as Psoriasis whereas asymmetry is more common with external causes such as Dermatitis or Herpes Zoster.
3. Itchy rash:
For example, eczema is usually extremely itchy and Psoriasis less so.
Sulphur: Itching is intolerable. Scratching relieves but causes burning.
Arsenicum Album: Itching, burning, swellings; œdema, eruption, papular, dry, rough, scaly; worse cold and scratching. Burning with restlessness.
Rhus Toxicodendron: Skin is red, swollen and itching is intense. Burning eczematous eruptions with tendency to scale formation
